Widows Care
Nigeria

2023

Women whose villages have been attacked by Boko Haram terrorists flee to the city of Maiduguri, where they are taken in and given first aid by the local widows’ association. We support them with food aid etc. But they urgently need their own living space in which they can live safely and with dignity with their children. By building homes for widows and orphans, we make a contribution to their security.

Project partner's aim

In Maiduguri, the provincial capital in north-eastern Nigeria, several thousand women who have been made widows by Boko Haram attacks are seeking protection. They have neither their own home nor a way to earn money to feed their children. Widows Care is helping them to build housing for single widows on a plot of land they bought, and several shops where they can work and sell what they made.

Aim of the BeA Foundation

The half-finished flats are to be completed with windows and doors and a sales room is to be built for the sale of water from their own well.

Project details

When Boko Haram terrorists raid villages, they usually kill the men who don’t want to fight with them, often in front of their wives. They take these with them to their camps, where they have to do slave labor or are married off to fighters. Children are trained to fight. Women who were able to escape from these camps, often traumatized, gather under the umbrella of the “Maiduguri Widows’ Association” and are supported by Widowscare eV with food aid and school fees for their children, including the orphans they take in. They urgently need their own living space in which they can live safely with their children – and perhaps where they can overcome their trauma. Now that the Widows’ Association has managed to buy some building land, we want to help to build there as many dwellings as possible for the widows who need it most. So that they can create a livelihood for themselves and their children, shops are to be built where they can work and sell. Tailoring, hairdressing, for example, but also the sale of drinking water, as there is a well on the site with a larger underground water reservoir.

The apartments consist of two bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom and a terrace. The first apartments are already half finished. Many widows eagerly await the return of a private place of their own where they can close a door behind them.
